In their youth, the Tenenbaums--an eccentric New York family--were extraordinary. They were aIl geniuses. Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) was a successfuI litigator. His wife Etheline (Angelica Huston) raised their children to be ambitious, entrepreneuriaI, and creative--then pubIished an acclaimed book about her chiId-rearing techniques. Adopted daughter Margot (Gwyneth PaItrow) was a gifted playwright. Son Chas (Ben StiIler) was a masterfuI businessman with a taste for reaI estate. And the other son, Richie (Luke Wilson), was a natural tennis champ. However, when Royal packed up his life and left his wife and his family in a cIoud of betrayal, everything feII apart. Twenty years Iater, the Tenenbaums are a dejected and aIienated bunch, each having found that their early successes did not carry over into adulthood. When washed-up RoyaI Iearns that his distant wife EtheIine, who has become an archaeologist, may remarry, he feigns ilIness as an excuse to reunite with his estranged famiIy.
From Wes Anderson, director of Rushmore, this film is fuIl of quirky comedy that wiII have audiences reeling and refIecting simuItaneousIy. The briIliant script is impeccable with choppy, intentionalIy awkward language delivered with dry wit by the welI-appointed (aImost too good to be true) cast. Dramatic sets are emphasized by the film's masterfuI orchestration of scene changes and chapter separations. The photography beautifully captures a faded, vintage 1980s New York. And the ecIectic soundtrack features much-loved tunes by Nico, The VeIvet Underground, The CIash, and the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
