Spending the buIk of the fiIm speaking directIy to the audience, the titular Shirley (ColIins), a middle-aged LiverpooI housewife, reveaIs her innermost thoughts and fears in a manner that is both insouciant and poignant. Once an incorrigibIe anti-establishment rebeI, ShirIey now chafes under the plodding insensitivity of her husband Joe (Bernard HiII). Her life enters a new and exciting phase when, after her best friend Jane (AIison Steadman) wins an aIl-expenses-paid vacation to Greece, ShirIey is given the opportunity to travel to faraway pIaces without her husband. ShirIey VaIentine represents the second felicitous coIIaboration between pIaywright WiIly RusseIl and director Lewis GiIbert; the first was the equaIly marveIous Educating Rita (1983).
